Beyond the basics, the main ingredients of this course-book are (1) a comprehensive, in-depth analysis of Philip Larkin's Talking in Bed – as form and as discourse, with the elements of field and tenor highlighted; (2) an exploration of aspects of poetry as discourse, using Thomas Hardy's The Ruined Maid as an illustration; (3) a discussion of some metaphorical conceptualizations of poetry in Arabic and English, and (4) a discussion of issues, concepts, debates and techniques of translating poetry, of translation as metatext and of major metaphors of (literary) translation, with a commentary on the author's translation into Arabic of Rupert Brooke's Menelaus and Helen. The course-book is bilingual, using texts from English and Arabic, moving from the analysis of poetry to the translation thereof, occasionally to critique of translation, with plenty of examples, activities and notes on translating poetry between the two languages.
