Wind power is one of the quickest growing energy sources worldwide.Typically, the control system of a wind energy conversion system (WECS) has a hierarchy of three levels. The higher level is a supervisory controller that produces commands related to start up, shut down, breaking, and other safety and operational commands. The middle level decides the optimized set points for speed, power, and current. The lower level is composed of the feedback loops that attempt to achieve the set points as set by the middle level. The control strategy is to capture maximum energy as long as the system operates in region 2. Here, we will focus on the middle and low levels within the control hierarchy. Specifically, in Chapter 2, we will present a fuzzy algorithm for maximum power tracking. In Chapter 3, we will propose adaptive fuzzy controllers to track the set points of various feedback loops in the low level. The proposed control algorithms are tested experimentally using a hardware-in-the loop concept in Chapter 4.
