Diabetes is one of the most important chronic diseases and a major health problem that is spreading all over the world. According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases that have in common the rise in blood sugar levels due to a defect in insulin secretion or a defect in their function, or both. In 2010, approximately 285 million people worldwide had diabetes, and by 2030 it is expected to reach 366 million. According to the World Health Organization, the number of people with diabetes in 2000 was 171 million. According to the statistics of the Iranian Diabetes Association in 2006, more than 4 million people in Iran had diabetes, while this number triples every 15 years. Also, according to the statistics of this association, there are 30,000 diabetic patients in Gilan province. More than 5 million people in the United States are at risk for diabetes-related problems and complications. Complications of diabetes are divided into macro and microvascular. Microvascular complications include retinopathy and nerve lesions, neuropathy, diabetic foot ulcer, and nephropathy.
